Visit the Fireplace

Introduction

The Fireplace welcomes friends and visitors to attend twice-weekly community dinners. As we are able, we also host visitors in our guest rooms and host or organize events in our communal space.

  • If you would like to stay at the Fireplace on a short-term basis, please fill out our visit interest form. Submitting this form does not guarantee that we will be able to accommodate your request. We will contact you to confirm whether or not we are able to host you.

  • If you would like to host an event (such as a workshop, concert, meeting, group retreat, or prayer service) at the Fireplace, please reach out to thefireplacecommunity@gmail.com. The Fireplace has several gathering rooms, a chapel, and a yard with a patio and stage.

  • To learn about living at the Fireplace, visit our apply page.

This page includes details about staying at the Fireplace, community dinners, and accessibility.

Stay at the Fireplace

As we are able, the Fireplace uses our guest rooms to host visitors. We invite visitors to make a donation of $40-$60 per night.

Please inquire if you would like to offer contributions such as labor (e.g. cooking, repair, workshops, online promotion) or supplies. We will communicate with you about our current needs.

A stay in our home includes a private bedroom, a shared bathroom, clean linens, and access to our communal kitchen and food. Guests have access to our library, chapel, living room, yard, dining room, and laundry room. There is WiFi throughout the house. Our community has shared dinners and prayer twice a week, and you are welcome (though not required) to join us. While we love hosting, we also ask that guests follow our community norms and respect residents’ need for private space and time.

The Fireplace welcomes short-term guests who are seeking…

  • A place of respite: Come for a self-guided retreat.

  • A place for creation: Creatives, artists, writers, and musicians may come for self-guided informal residencies.

  • An intentional community connection: Learn about the Fireplace.

  • A place to stay: Stay with us while visiting Chicago for a training, conference, political action, or similar activity.

A short-term stay at the Fireplace is typically two weeks or less. People interested in living at the Fireplace longer-term must complete our resident application process.

Community dinners

Local friends often join us for twice-weekly community dinner and prayer. If you would like to participate, email thefireplacecommunity@gmail.com to introduce yourself and express interest!

Accessibility

As a community that values inclusion, we strive to increase accessibility. Currently, however, the house is not fully accessible.

  • All house entrances and bedrooms require the use of stairs.

  • As we have an emotional support cat in our home, the Fireplace may not be accessible to people with severe cat allergies.

  • A current resident has inhalant allergies that impact what food can be cooked in the house. A sign in the kitchen provides details.

  • We strive to accommodate dietary needs and preferences. All of our shared meals are vegetarian-friendly; please inquire in advance about other dietary needs.

  • Smoking inside the house is not permitted.

  • The Fireplace can be reached via public transportation. There is a bus stop on the corner, with connections to the Red Line, Green Line, and Metra/South Shore Line trains.

  • The Fireplace has a driveway and free street parking is readily available nearby.

  • The Fireplace asks that community members take care to avoid spreading COVID-19 in our space.
